Just as we may hurt a friend or relative by doing wrong, God is saddened when we sin. An important step in receiving God's unconditional forgiveness is being able to confess our sins to Him. Picture a friend who you've done wrong. If you say nothing and act like it didn't happen, there's an "elephant in the room" and you may resort to avoiding this person. Although God extends unconditional forgiveness to us, we also have to confess those sins to Him in order to fully accept that forgiveness and not be tempted to run/hide from Him. 

The most important thing to remember though is that God is there with open arms, He does extend that unconditional forgiveness -- He's listening to our confession, not holding it against us, and receives us back in.
